Traditional Homemade Dutch Waffles Stroopwafels
Stroopwafels are a popular treat from the Netherlands, known as Dutch syrup waffles, featuring two thin waffles stuck together with a layer of sweet syrup. These delicious treats, if handled carefully, can even be used as a delectable coffee topper.
Ingredients
For the Waffles:
- 4 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1⁄2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1⁄2 Cup of white sugar
- 1 Cup of unsalted butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 Package of active dry yeast
For the Filling:
- 11⁄2 cups of dark corn syrup
- 1 Cup of packed brown sugar
- 1 Cup of unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

Directions
To prepare the waffles, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for a few minutes. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, butter, egg, and cinnamon together and then add in the yeast mixture. Knead until you have a smooth dough. Let the dough rise in a warm place for an hour.
While the dough rises, make the filling by combining all the filling ingredients and heating until everything melts together, resulting in a syrupy consistency.
Divide the dough into small balls and roll each one out. Bake them in a preheated waffle iron until golden brown.
As soon as a waffle comes off the iron, place it onto a chopping board, and spread a layer of the syrup mixture on one side. Quickly place another waffle on top to create a sandwich. Repeat this with the remaining waffles and syrup.
