  • 1 box chocolate cake mix Added to
  • 1 Cup water Added to
  • 12 Cup vegetable oil Added to
  • 3 large eggs Added to

For the buttercream:

  • 1 Cup unsalted butter, softened Added to
  • 412 cups powdered sugar Added to
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Added to
  • 212 tbls milk Added to
  • Black food coloring Added to

For the cat design:

  • Black licorice laces Added to
  • M&M candies or similar for the eyes Added to
  • Colored fondant for the nose Added to

1. Step

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C), and grease and flour your cake pans.

2. Step

In large bowl, beat the cake mix, water, oil and eggs with electric mixer on low speed until moistened.

3. Step

Pour the batter evenly into the pans and bake as directed on the box for the specific pan size. Let the cake cool completely.

4. Step

To make the buttercream, beat the soft butter until creamy. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.

Add vanilla and milk; beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add in the black food coloring until the desired shade is achieved.

6. Step

Ice the cooled cakes with the black buttercream.

7. Step

Using black licorice laces, create the outline of a cat on the surface of the cake. Fill in the outline with more black buttercream.

8. Step

Use M&M candies to make the eyes of the cat and colored fondant to make the nose.
