How to make Black Cat Chocolate Cake
A fun and spooky Halloween themed cake that features a cute black cat design on top. This cake is frosted with black vanilla buttercream icing, layered with rich chocolate cake, and is perfect for any cat or Halloween lover.
Ingredients
For the cake:
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 1 Cup water
- 1⁄2 Cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
For the buttercream:
- 1 Cup unsalted butter, softened
- 41⁄2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 21⁄2 tbls milk
- Black food coloring
For the cat design:
- Black licorice laces
- M&M candies or similar for the eyes
- Colored fondant for the nose

Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C), and grease and flour your cake pans.
In large bowl, beat the cake mix, water, oil and eggs with electric mixer on low speed until moistened.
Pour the batter evenly into the pans and bake as directed on the box for the specific pan size. Let the cake cool completely.
To make the buttercream, beat the soft butter until creamy. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.
Add vanilla and milk; beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add in the black food coloring until the desired shade is achieved.
Ice the cooled cakes with the black buttercream.
Using black licorice laces, create the outline of a cat on the surface of the cake. Fill in the outline with more black buttercream.
Use M&M candies to make the eyes of the cat and colored fondant to make the nose.
Serve your Black Cat Cake at room temperature for the best flavor.
