Homemade Australian Dagwood Corn Dog

A Dagwood Dog is a classic Australian fair treat, also known as a corn dog in America. It's essentially a hot dog sausage on a stick, coated in a cornmeal batter and deep fried to golden perfection. It's fun to make and is sure to be a hit at gatherings or kids' parties.

1. Step

Insert a skewer into each hot dog sausage leaving enough of the skewer exposed to be able to hold it.

2. Step

In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

3. Step

In another bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Gradually add this to the dry ingredients, stirring until the batter is smooth.

4. Step

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large deep saucepan to 375°F (190°C).

5. Step

Holding onto the skewer, dip each hot dog sausage into the batter, coating it evenly.

6. Step

Carefully place the coated sausages one at a time into the hot oil. Fry until they are golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.

7. Step

Using a skewer, remove the dagwood dogs and let them drain on paper towels.

8. Step

Serve hot with ketchup and mustard.
