Vegan bacon from seitan
As a vegan for years, I could really miss the crunch and smoky flavor of bacon. After trying a few plant-based alternatives that didn't fully satisfy me, I decided to create my own vegan bacon. After countless experiments and adjustments, I'm proud to share this recipe with everyone- vegan bacon is delicious !
Ingredients
- 200 g Sliced seitan
- 2 Tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 Tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 TL liquid smoke
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 1 TL paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste

Directions
To make vegan bacon mix soy sauce, maple syrup, liquid smoke, olive oil, paprika, salt and pepper in a bowl. Always stir well to make sure all ingredients are evenly distributed.
Place the seitan in the bowl and stir until it is completely coated in the marinade. During my first attempts, I found that seitan tends to hide at the bottom of the bowl, so make sure you move it well through the marinade.
Let the seitan marinate for 10-15 minutes. The longer you wait, the more intense the flavor will be, so take your time if you can.
Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, place the seitan on the pan and cook each side for 2-3 minutes, or until the edges are crispy. Tip: I've found that waiting until the edges are crispy really helps achieve the right "bacon" feel.
Remove the "bacon" from the pan and place it on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Enjoy your vegan "bacon" anywhere you would normally use bacon. Just as delicious as the meat version.
