Directions
Start by preheating your oven to 180°C (350°F). It's essential to have the oven properly heated to ensure the pastry puffs correctly.
Lay out the first sheet of puff pastry on a baking paper-lined tray. Use a star-shaped template and a knife to carefully cut out the star shape. Once done, remove the cut-outs and save for decoration if desired.
Spread a generous layer of Nutella over the top of the star. Make sure to leave a small border around the edges for sealing. I've learned from experience; spreading slightly warmed Nutella makes this easier.
Repeat the same procedure with the second layer of puff pastry, placing it over the Nutella layer.
Press the edges of the layers together to ensure a good seal. A tip: use the tines of a fork to seal the edges; it'll create a pretty pattern.
With a sharp knife, starting from the center, cut lines out to the points of the star to create \branches\ of the tree.
Twist each \branch\ twice to make it look like a tree. Do this gently to avoid damaging the pastry.
Brush the tree with a beaten egg which will definitely give it a beautiful golden color when baked.
Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry has puffed and is golden. Watch it closely as it bakes; puff pastry can go from perfectly golden to burnt quite quickly!
While the pastry is still warm, decorate with sprinkles. Festive colored ones work well for Christmas!
